Abstract

The effect of PowerPoint Presentation–based (PPPb) quiz to the students’ scores has been rarely studied. It is the intention of this research to understand the effect of PPPb quiz to students score in wave motion and the students’ experiences under such a strategy. This research used a mixed approach: quasi-experimental to learn if scores gain was significant, and thematic analysis was used to know the experiences of the students. The results confirmed that PPPb quiz has indeed increased the scores of the students. Statistical analysis verified that this increase was significant. On the thematic analysis, students manifested comparing oral quiz to PPPb, caught their attention, and vivid communication. Therefore, the effect of PPPb was significant to the students because it positively impacted their scores in wave motion and promoted vivid communication among students.

Abstract

Many companies that are striving to expand their development and production are finding it difficult to do so successfully. This is due to the shortage of qualified employees to help sustain their competitive edge in the global market. This dilemma is due to skills gaps; more importantly a mismatch between available jobs and skills. It is imperative to prepare the workforce for technical jobs and as well to find a lasting solution to eradicate the effect of skills and training gaps on college graduates. This paper addresses the causes of skills and training gaps and the need to minimize the impact of skills and training gaps through professional development.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know how the attitude of junior high school students to science mathematics with three indicators adopted from TOSRA are: 1) pleasure in learning science, 2) interest to increase study time of science, and 3) interest in a career in the science field. This research uses survey type research with design research is quantitative design. This research was conducted in several junior high schools in Muaro Jambi district with total 2815 of total students. The instruments used are attitude questionnaires and interview sheets. The data analysis used for quantitative data is the descriptive statistical type and reinforced by interview analysis. The result of the research shows that students with the indicator of pleasure in learning science, and interest in increasing the study time dominant IPA has a good attitude category, while the indicator of career interest in the field of IPA dominant has a fairly good attitude category.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the use of learning media Virtual Reality Laboratory (VR-Lab) on the conceptual understanding of Senior high school students on the concept of electrolytes and non-electrolytes. The learning media used were developed using models adapted from the ADDIE model, while the type of research as a whole uses this type of research, namely Quasy experiment with posttest only design. The instrument used in this study was a multiple choice question of 40 items. This research was conducted using 84 students consisting of the control class, experiment I, and experiment II. The analysis technique used one-way ANOVA. The results obtained in this study were that between the control class and experiment I class there were no significant differences with a mean of 44.91 and 45.67. Whereas for the experimental II class had a significant difference with the other two classes with an average of 68.66.

Abstract

This study explored the trends in students’ achievement in Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Further Mathematics in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive research design of ex-post factor type. The sample comprised all Further Mathematics students in 79 public senior secondary schools with 3 Local Government Areas in Kwara State. Two research questions were raised and answered in the study. Frequency count, Percentage and Autoregressive (AR) processes for modelling of time series analyses were used to analyse the data. The results revealed that the trend of students’ achievement in WASSCE Further Mathematics from 2007 to 2016 was stochastic with random walk steadily progressive and percentage of the students obtained credit ranged from 23.0 to 77.3; pass ranged from 18.2 to 72.2 and fail ranged from 0.0 to 25.8. It was recommended among others that stakeholders in education should improve the quest for scientific literacy particularly for science-based subjects and further Mathematics curriculum should be all inclusive and non-discriminating to allow development of problem solving ability.

Abstract

The previous research result showed that the learning model based on the investigation could increase the students’ critical thinking skills. The aim of this research was to measure the effectiveness of the using of problem-based learning model to increase the students’ critical thinking skills. The research design was quasi-experiment by using post-test only design. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of science which contained 124 students of SMAN 6 and SMAN 7 Kupang that were chosen randomly. The treatment that was given in this research was problem-based learning model for the experiment class and conventional model for the control class whereas the given materials were the reaction rate. The learning process in the experimental class begins with the provision of contextual problems aimed at increasing students' interest and motivation in finding and designing solutions to solve problems individually or in groups. The instrument that was used in this research previously validated by two experts of theory and material. The result of this research showed that the students who studied in experiment class had different critical thinking skills better that the students who studied using conventional model.

Abstract

Scienceeducation is believed to be a vital tool for individual and societal development at large. The persistent low levels of students’ achievement in sciences at the various public examinations in Nigeria have continued to draw the attention of major stakeholders in education. This study examined academic achievement of Senior Secondary School students in biology and gender difference in students’ achievement was examined. Ex-post facto design of descriptive research was adopted for the study. A proforma was used to collect data from a sample of two hundred (200) students, selected using stratified random sampling procedure from the Science secondary schools in Kano state Nigeria. The data collected were the students’ performances in biology achievement tests. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and independent-sample t-test. Overall results showed that the test internal consistency reliability is low and unsatisfactory;  the students performed below average (M=47.02, SD=16.493 (47%). Similarly, gender difference exists in biology performance with another significant difference between performance of urban and rural school students. The study concludes that, biology test used in Kano state qualifying examinations to assess students potential ability in biology is not a reliable measurement tool and that, academic performance of students in biology is unsatisfactory and evidence of differential performance between gender and schools locations. The implication for measurements and evaluation of learning as well as recommendations has been discussed.

Abstract

This exploratory study was aimed at evaluating a module on the basis of the constructivist learning strategies to enhance the students’ motivation in Statistics learning. The design and development followed the Universal Design of Learning principles. The design included flexible instructional materials, techniques, and strategies for differentiating instruction which benefited the students of English Education Department taking the Statistics course. The study used a survey covering of 33 students. The students’ and teacher’ responses to questionnaires revealed that the students’ motivation and satisfaction increased toward the Statistics course in which Universal Design of Learning using various means of representation, action, and engagement was applied. It also suggested that the module was effective and that the Universal Design of Learning Model from the learners’ viewpoint put more emphasis on instruction. Its content was suitable in designing and developing module on Statistics in the higher educational context in Indonesia. The study results are expected to reveal information on how to further improve the Statistics teaching and learning quality. Abstract

This study aims to produce responsibility character module to improve student self-regulated learning. The research method uses research and development. The research subjects involved in the need assessment were 248 students of Guidance and Counseling, School of Education, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta which was obtained by random sampling technique. Data collection using the scale of self-regulated learning. The scale of selfregulated learning is adapted from Zimmerman's theory which consists of three aspects: cognitive, motivation and behavioral aspects. Data were analyzed using mean test. The result of the need assessment is used as a reference to develop the responsibility character module to improve student self-regulated learning. This study successfully created a module of responsibility character to improve university students’ self-regulated learning which is consisted of 12 materials that had been validated and revised; therefore it is eligible to be implemented in the self-regulated learning context.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss about utilization of Whatsapp application as discussion media in Blended Learning. This study sought to integrate learning technologies to improve the quality of student's learning. Messenger application is used to communicate synchronously, so it can be positioned as a discussion media. This study focused on Whatsapp capabilities can be utilized to conduct in online learning of Blended Learning. This study aims to describe the discussion media. This study through the literature review that outlines the stages of Blended Learning using Whatsapp application as a discussion media by using qualitative methods. The result shows that Whatsapp application utilization as a discussion media in Blended Learning sessions initiated by offline using conventional methods, so the online session focused on the discussion as indicated by dialogue and interaction among participants.
